The leaves are blue to silver-gray, which is why the Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Columnaris' is often called blue spruce, but it is not blue spruce. The Chamaecyparis 'Columnaris' looks best in a tight hedge, but can also stand as an eye-catcher solitary.
